Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), developed by3GPP, is a third generation mobile cellular system. UMTS is a component of the IMT 2000 standard set, uses WCDMA radio access technology offering greater spectral efficiency and bandwidth to mobile network operators. Later releases to this standard include HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSPA. The course addresses the fundamentals of 3G covering WCDMA RAT, Air interface protocols, procedures, upgrades and future evolution.
EXPECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Identify UMTS network components and interfaces and explain their functionality
- List the major releases of UMTS standard and what they support
- Describe the AS/NAS protocol stack
- Compare the concepts of spreading and scrambling in WCDMA
- State the UMTS channels and illustrate their mapping between logical, transport and physical channels
- Explain the key power control concepts in WCDMA
- Explain mobility concepts in UMTS
- Explain basic UMTS call flows and the main NAS concepts
- Summarize the architectural enhancements s in HSDPA and HSUPA
- Illustrate the main HSDPA, HSUPA and HSPA+ concepts and principle
